Aston Villa Fc were founded in 1874. Villa currently hold the record number of league goals scored by any team in the English top-flight; 128 goals were scored in the 1930–31 season. Villa legend Archie Hunter became the first player to score in every round of the FA Cup in Villa's victorious 1887 campaign. Villa's longest unbeaten home run in the FA Cup spanned 13 years and 19 games, from 1888 to 1901.

WBA were one of the founding members of the football league 1888 and have spent the majority of their existence in the top tier of English football. They have been champions of England in 1919-20, but have had more success in the fa cup, with five wins. The first came in 1888, the year the league was founded, and the most recent in 1968, which was their last major trophy. They also won the football league cup at the first attempt in 1966. The club had their first major success in 1955, when they won the league championship. The stadium is served by The Hawthorns station, which is both a railway station and Midland Metro (tram) stop. The station is approximately 400 metres from the ground.

Bus routes 74 and 79 pass the stadium along the Birmingham Road, with services running between Birmingham and Dudley/Wolverhampton. The 450 bus stops on Halfords Lane but is rerouted approximately 1 hour before kick off as police close Halfords Lane.
